For a good general overview of the main points to consider in the TEFL classroom:

It is very helpful to have a good base of grammatical knowledge to teach all levels:
  • 'English Grammar in Use' (Murphy, R.). This is used by students as a self-study book and describes grammatical forms and rules very clearly and simply.
  • 'How to teach grammar' (Scott Thornbury). This considers ways of presenting grammar, error and correction, integrating grammar into the lesson plan and how to test.
For the skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) the Pearson 'How to...' series is recommendable:
