Classroom management considerations to help teachers with close control practice activities: pairing of students.

To finish our series of articles on the close control stage of the TEFL pyramid, it is important for TEFL trainees to bare in mind several considerations for the pairing of students in a close control activity:

  1. Do the students get on well? If so, do they normally end up practising together? If so, maybe for the sake of variety and not becoming dependant on each other, the students should be paired with different partners.
  2. Are you maximising student production at the cost of being able to monitor error (articles 43, 44. and 45)? If so, consider paying the cost of lowering student production somewhat by doing the activity in groups of 3 or 4, but gaining in the sense of being able to adequately monitor the students’ language samples.
  3. Can you have students change partners during the activity? If so, this will bring advantages to weaker students who will have the opportunity to interact with stronger students, and energise the activity by virtue of bring movement into the classroom.
These points require the TEFL teacher to reflect and continually adapt their stance depending on the group's evolution and the teacher's understanding of the group's dynamic.
