Close Control task types 4. Reconstructions. Malaga TEFL Teacher Training Centre.


One of the most time-honoured close control activities is the reconstruction. The principle can be applied to any material: written pieces, video, sound recordings, visuals and events.

To illustrate let’s consider a few examples:

Written pieces: TEFL teachers can take a short piece of writing which has the target structure embedded in it with a high frequency (from presentational text in a student’s book for example) and cut it up, distribute it to the students and ask them to memorise their piece. Collect the pieces in and allow the students to mingle and listen to all the memorised pieces and then they have to try and rewrite the original piece in the right order.

Video clips: The teacher takes a short video clip (appropriate to the target structure and context) and plays 10 to 20 second extracts in a jumbled order to the students. The students then have to mingle and listen to each other describing their individual video clips (using the target structure language). The students then try to identify which order each student would have had to have seen the video for it to have been seen in the correct order. This is good for any tense work, indirect speech and linking words.

Visuals: Cut up a picture into strips. Make sure that the parts of the picture either side of the cut have elements which are shared in order to relate them to each other e.g. clothes, activities, objects etc. The cut up strips are then distributed to the students who are spread out around the room so they can work behind barriers (at the TEFL Centre we use upright folders). Students then take it in turns to describe their picture and the other students draw what they are hearing. When everyone has finished, students use their drawings to decide which student has which part of the picture. This activity is very good for present continuous, prepositions, possessives, there is/are, have/has got and for modals expressing probability and hypothesis.
