Skills: reading 1. Tasks for reading activities.

Given the present day emphasis on exam preparation, many reading activities are now based on the reading tasks used by the main examination bodies, particularly Cambridge English Language Assessment. These include the following:

  1. Answering questions about a picture or picture story.
  2. Giving a title to a text from multiple choice options.
  3. Deciding if a statement about a text is true or false or the information is not given.
  4. Answering multiple choice questions.
  5. Matching words to definitions.
  6. Completing continuous dialogues.
  7. Matching prompt sentences to notices.
  8. Matching descriptions of people to texts.
  9. Completing a definition.
  10. Gapped texts (paragraphs have been removed and the candidate must choose from the separated paragraphs which one fits in each gap in the text)
  11. Gapped sentences (words have been removed from a sentence and the candidate must choose from the separated words which one fits in each gap in each sentence)
  12. Open cloze test (samples of writing are given with missing individual words and the candidate must decide which word fits in each gap in the text)
  13. Multiple choice cloze test  (samples of writing with missing individual words and the candidate must decide which of several given words fits in each gap in the text)
  14. Information transfer, where input texts prompt the completion of an output text such as a form, note, etc.

These approaches to assessing language competence greatly affect the way in which TEFL teachers design their lessons, since to a large extent their success as language teachers will be determined by their exam pass rate.

At the TEFL Centre, we train teachers how to create lesson plans that take these requirements into account, but at the same time engage students and motivate them. In the following articles we will talk about how to use classroom management, creativity and a communicative approach to attain the desired results of passing an exam and simultaneously supplying fun motivating classes.
