The last stage of the TEFL pyramid: the Free Stage. 1 Introduction

The general approach to teaching English as a foreign language promoted by the TEFL Centre is based on the TEFL pyramid. It consists of 5 basic concepts, the first 3 of which are:
  1. Before teaching each class (and any new target language), a ‘warmer’ is needed.
  2. The new language then needs presenting (involving contextualisation, grammar focus, written practice/exercises, and drilling).
  3. The new language needs to be used by the students in a concentrated form to allow them to become used to the structure, syntax, pronunciation, intonation and to allow them to communicate meaningfully with the language. Communicating allows the student to associate the new language with communicative cognitive tasks and mental processes and this in turn makes it easier to access the language when appropriate (as dictated by the situation).
The next step is intended to allow the student to take part in an activity where the target language will be desirable to achieve the task, but there will also be a need for other previously learnt language to be used. The idea is to give the student free reign to use the target language as and when needed, rather than pouring out a high frequency production of it. This leads us to the ‘Free Stage’, with ‘free’ signifying that the activity gives the student freedom to choose from one structure or another to achieve the task.

In the following articles we will go more deeply into different aspects of this stage Article 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54).
